Article Marketing Mistakes: The 3 Most Common Ones…
Posted by Aaron Anderson at Jan 15th, 2008 in SEO Tools
“Article marketing no longer works” is what some say. Of course, if you write garbage and expect people to eat it, this could be true. But it works if you do it right and can be about the most powerful marketing tools you have. Below are three mistakes in article marketing that are commonly made.
1. Not keeping the reason you write articles straight with the reason you use the articles you write to promote your business.
While a number of reasons exist for the promotion of your business using articles, there is just one reason to write those articles.
First lets talk about reasons for promoting your business with articles. Articles drive traffic to your website. They also position you as an expert in whatever field you are writing about. Now those are great and all but it should not be your focus for writing an article. Then why write articles?
Good value is what you should be giving readers with your article writing. Readers will know right away if you have any other agenda for your writing and they won’t like it one bit. If you are writing articles this way, you are spinning your wheels.
Your readers will only trust you if you give them good value. You can advise them that you have more information on your site in the resource box.
2. Not using the full potential of each article
After you write an article, then what do you do? Your next step is to make certain your resource box is enticing. It will do you no good if you produce marvelous articles but no one clicks the links in you resource box. Provide a reason for readers to want to click the link to your site.
Another technique for increasing the effectiveness of your articles is putting your keywords as the hyper-link text in your resource box. That way you will not only get visitors directly from clicking through the link to your website but also indirectly by helping your website rank in the search engines.
After your article is prepared, submission to article directories is next. And that’s it, right? WRONG!
A lot of people stop here and this is where they go wrong. Individual web publishers is where you go next to submit your article. Article directories are mostly visited by others also submitting articles. You want your article to be read by actual people and this will happen when web publishers put your article on their sites and email it to their lists.
3. Writing articles that aren’t helpful to the reader
If your articles are of little use to readers, one of two things will happen. And your online business won’t be helped by either of them.
First, no one will trust you after reading your article. If they even do finish reading it. Chances are they won’t. The likelihood is that they will click away first.
Second, anyone putting your article on their site is not even going to be considered. If they put your article on their site, they would be risking their own reputation. They will lose trust if they put an article up that is garbage. This means you won’t get much in the way of links either. So it would be a waste of time.
Dead is not a good description of article marketing. It just takes a little more time and effort to do it right. But doing it right will mean great benefits for your business, so it is worth the effort.

Another mistake many people make is to use article submission software that either submits the exact same article to the different article directories, and thus gets most of them caught in the dreaded “duplicate content” filters… or uses “content spooling” software that makes the articles read like something written by a Grade 2 kid.
I use some software called ArtemisPro, and it does a great job of submitting unique, high-quality articles to not only article directories, but also webmasters who are looking for top-quality articles to publish on their websites and their ezines.
Cheers,
Jim
Hi Jim,
I’ve used ArtemisPro (from James Brausch) myself and it’s pretty effective, it’s just a bit of a pain to format the articles correctly and to build up your own list of ezines to send out to.
The two services that I use now are:
http://www.uniquearticleswizard.com
http://www.jetspiner.com
they give you the same results, but are a lot easier to actually use.

I was orginally recommmended to isnare, but one read of the website was enough to put me off.
I use Noel Swanson’s Unique Article Wizard too. For this kind of service you need to know that the guy knows what he’s talking about, and Noel certainly does.
Once you’ve gone through the pain of submitting your first article, it’s really easy to use. I should add that for me it’s the pain of writing - not the service itself!
