Home Based Internet Business Guide Step One
Posted by Administrator at Oct 15th, 2005 in 1. Clickbank Products
Hi Alex,
the Home Based Internet Businesses Blog is up at last!
So where do we start?
I did say I was going to keep this quick and simple to try and make sure you can get a site up and earning with the minimum fuss, so instead of trying to find a hungry market of people looking for a solution to a problem, we’re going to shortcut the process and go straight in to finding a product to pormote using an affiliate program.
This way you can start by setting up a simple one paged affiliate site.
An affiliate program is a program that allows you to recommend someone else’s product and make money from doing so.
How? Well, you get a special link that you put on your site that when a visitor clicks on the link it tracks them and if the purchase the product you get a commission.
So the first thing to do is visit ClickBank and sign up for free as an affiliate with them: -

N.B. when you choose your affiliate nickname, try and keep it something simple and generic.
Here’s a few example to get the creative juices flowing : – direct, redirect, publish, track, tracker, nullid, clicklink, linkdirect, forward
It’s not essential as we will hide the link anyway, but if you can come up with something good that hasn’t already gone it’s worth taking a few minutes to do so.
Once you’ve signed up with them you need to find a few products that you like the look of, so visit the “Clickbank Marketplace” here: -
http://www.home-based-internet-businesses.org/clickbank.html
Choose a category and have a look at a few products.
If you right click on the link and choose “Open in new Tab/Window” it will save hitting the “Back” button on your browser and save some time.
Open up a text file with notepad and make a note of the website address for the products you’re interested in.
You also need to left click on the “earn nn%” link, which will open a new window with the affiliate link url you need to promote that product.
The link is the bit of code under
To refer a customer send them to this domain name:
confirm.richjerk.hop.clickbank.net
The “confirm” bit is what you will need to replace with your clickbank affiliate nickname.
Copy and paste the link in to your text file under the website name for the proiduct.
You should save this file in a “new web ideas” folder as soemthing like “website-ideas-clickbank.txt”
Once you’ve got a few different prospective products, visit each of the sites again and try and work out what the most likely search terms are that people would type in to a search engine to find the product and make a note of these in your text file.
We will use these for the next stage.
Let me know once you’ve got this done and we’ll move on to the next stage, which is keyword discovery.

Alright Matt?
Got a bit of time on me hands so thought I’d dive into this internet-business primordial soup and see what I could come up with!
The clickbank sign-up is straight-forward. Tried a few nicknames but they’d already been nicked! However, spotted the fact you could put in numbers and so had “forward2me” accepted. Is it essential to have a good one? Given time & energy I could probably come up with a better one. Does having a number in it reduce usefulness in the longterm/going forward?
I’ve browsed the clickbank marketplace. Quite a few products are so American… It’s quite hard getting my head around the fact that it will be a global audience I’m plugging things to, rather than targeting for the UK – or am I wrong and is local/niche the best? After all google & the internet sector guru’s say that local search is the next big thing!
Also the wife will not be happy if I set up websites for dodgy merchandise so I’d better keep it clean
Have got a few thoughts but will sleep on it and browse again tomorrow.
Matt
Have come up with one particular niche thing to do with websites which I know is a big thing at the moment in the UK (but well behind the US)- dare I mention it yet?- plus a couple of broader themed ideas.
Think I could actually be interested in this niche one myself & it’ll entail some learning but looks within my reach. There are a couple of products on clickbank offering it.
So what’s next??
Alex
the clickbank nickname is not essential as we will be using a redirect to disguise the affiliate link anyway.
I’ve not really done much country specific stuff, I have had success with taking a us product and putting it on a UK domain (i.e. .co.uk), which is somehting I was going to recommend to you if you find a suitable product.
I can appreciate you not wanting to share which product/topic you are most keen on too openly on this blog in case any one reading decices to copy you, so we’ll call your favourite product/niche “project A”.
You are correct that it is a fairly hot topic, but it’s not paritcularly new and you will find it a fairly competetive market.
It is a market that I will be dabbling in shortly as I’ve actually purchased resale rights for some related products..
